Lionel Messi is playing much better in Paris Saint-Germain’s jersey in 2022-23 after an underwhelming first season with the Ligue 1 powerhouse. However, this might not be enough to keep the Argentine superstar in France.

According to influential Spanish reporter Miquel Blazquez, Messi isn’t interested in renewing his PSG contract and is ready to leave the club when he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2023.

If Messi does leave PSG, return to Barcelona seems to be the safest bet. The La Liga club’s brass has already hinted at this possibility several times during the summer, and Barca vice president Eduard Romeu recently said that the club’s current financial position would allow them to pull off this move.

“It would be possible financially because if he returned, it would be as a free agent,” Romeu said in a chat with Catalunya Radio. “But it’s a decision which has to be made by the coaching staff and the player. It doesn’t correspond to me [to make those decisions], but it would be viable.”

After becoming one of the best players in soccer history wearing Barca’s jersey, Lionel Messi left Camp Nou in the summer of 2021 to join PSG. Messi wanted to sign a new deal with Barcelona at the time, but the club’s poor financial situation made that impossible.

Messi struggled in his first year in France, managing only 11 goals in 34 appearances. His second year is off to a much better start as he already has six goals and eight assists.
