The Detroit Lions have rewarded their running back David Montgomery for his great production this season with a new contract extension.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions and Montgomery agreed to a two-year, $18.5 million extension over the weekend. The extension comes with $10.5 million in guaranteed money and extends Montgomery’s stay in Detroit through the 2027 NFL season.
“Yeah, I was definitely excited to know that we were able to get that done,” Montgomery said after the extension became public. “Just knowing that I’ll be in a place where I feel that I’m wanted and I’m able to showcase what I can really do.”
After spending the first four seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears, Montgomery signed a three-year, $18 million contract to join the Lions as a free agent last year. While the deal was initially labeled as overpaying, Montgomery quickly showed he would be a bargain for his new team.
Montgomery went on to produce his best season as a pro in 2023, rushing for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns in just 14 games while also adding 16 catches for 117 yards. He continued in the same fashion this season, having already amassed 351 yards and 6 TDs in the first five games.
