Lions Bring Back Former All-Pro LB Chris Spielman as a “Special Assistant”

The Detroit Lions continued their front office shakeup on Tuesday, bringing back a familiar face to help the organization with football and business operations.

The Lions announced that they hired former All-Pro linebacker Chris Spielman, who will serve as a “special assistant” to team president Rod Wood and owner Sheila Ford Hamp.

Spielman played with the Lions between 1988 and 1995, earning four Pro Bowl nods and three All-Pro honors. After retiring in 1999, he turned to broadcasting and most recently served as a game analyst for FOX Sports.

According to Wood, the organization had the intention to bring Chris Spielman on board for some time now, hoping he can help with the culture change and play a part in returning Detroit to winning ways after a few disappointing seasons.

The Lions approached Spielman shortly after firing general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia, believing he can give a big contribution in this transition period.

“I know exactly what Sheila and Rod want,” said Spielman in his first chat with reporters after assuming his new role. “And hopefully I can help them and us get there to where we need to be.”

Spielman isn’t the only former Lion who will give his input on the search for a new GM and head coach. Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, as well as ex-Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis and Fritz Pollard Alliance executive director Rod Grav, will also assist the team in the process.
