Liverpool has beaten Premier League rivals Manchester United to the signing of PSV striker Cody Gakpo. PSV announced the deal on Monday, adding that Gakpo is expected to leave for England immediately where he is set to complete the formalities necessary in order to close the deal.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the transfer fee for Gakpo is expected to be around £37 million ($45 million) with the player expected to become a Liverpool player once the January transfer window opens.

Prior to the Liverpool deal, Gakpo had been viewed as a transfer target by both Leeds United and Southampton. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag had also requested that his club consider making a deal for the player at the end of the summer transfer window, however, no formal offer was submitted.

At just 23 years of age, Gakpo was a crucial member of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad, scoring in each of the team’s group-stage games. His team was ultimately eliminated in a quarterfinal penalty shootout by the eventual champions Argentina.

With winger Luis Diaz out injured due to a knee injury, Liverpool is in desperate need of Gakpo to help fill in the gaps in its attacking lineup.
