Liverpool appears to be in prime position for a Premier League title run after a convincing 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday at Anfield, a victory that puts them 9 points clear of last year’s title winners in the standings.

Liverpool struck early to put Pep Guardiola’s side into a hole that it simply couldn’t dig out of. Fabinho scored the Reds’ first goal just six minutes into the game after an Ilkay Gundogan clearance fell to his feet. He drilled the shot past Claudio Bravo, giving Liverpool a 1-0 lead.

Only seven minutes later, Mo Salah got in on the act, putting home a cross from Andy Robertson to push the score to 2-0 after only 13 minutes.

Manchester City pushed and pushed, but found itself constantly repelled away by Reds keeper Allison Becker and the Liverpool defense. They couldn’t find the net again before Sadio Mane headed home a Jordan Henderson cross just after the break to put the game out of reach at 3-0.

Bernardo Silva scored a goal for City in the 78th minute, but it was too little, too late for last year’s EPL winners.

While it is early in the season, it now appears that Liverpool is the clear favorite to win its first league title since the 1989-90 season.
