After a 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League draw, it looked improbable that Liverpool would advance to the next round.

They certainly defied expectations after traveling to Germany and defeating Bayern Munich 1-3 on Wednesday.

Their victory advances them to the quarterfinals of the competition for the second straight year. Jürgen Klopp’s team reached the final last season, losing to Real Madrid in Kiev.

The star of the show in Liverpool’s win on Wednesday was forward Sadio Mané, who scored two crucial goals.

Mané opened the scoring with a brilliant goal in the 26th minute. He snaked past Rafinha and Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer to score a goal that gave his team the advantage.

Bayern’s only goal on the night came before halftime in the 39th minute. Liverpool defender Joël Matip scored an own goal to even up the match.

The second half, however, was dominated by the Reds.

Virgil van Dijk gave Liverpool a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish in the 69th minute, scoring a rare goal for the Dutch international defender.

The proverbial nail in the coffin came with Mané’s second goal on the night in the 84th minute, vaulting Klopp’s side into the finals.

Now, they must wait for Friday morning’s Champions League draw to see who they will face in the next round.
