Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliot was stretchered off the field after an hour of play during his side’s Premier League game against Leeds United following a dangerous tackle by Pascal Struijk. As a result, the club has announced that the 18-year-old will have to undergo surgery.

Following the Reds’ 3-0 victory over Leeds, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced that Elliot’s ankle had been dislocated. “Harvey Elliott is in hospital, a bad ankle injury for sure. It looked like it was dislocated, the medical department put it back. Massive pain, shock for him, for us and we don’t know more. We have to wait,” he explained.

As a result of the seriousness of the injury, Liverpool physios ran onto the field to attend to the injured player even before the referee had brought a halt to the game. Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Salah, along with Klopp himself, appeared to express a visibly upset reaction soon after the dangerous tackle occurred.

Following the dangerous challenge on Elliot, referee Craig Dawson conferred with fourth official Andy Madley in order to reach a decision on how to handle the incident. Following their discussion, Dawson showed Struijk the red card due to endangering his opponent’s safety.
