Luis Enrique is no longer the head coach of Spain’s national soccer team, Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Wednesday. According to RFEF’s president Luis Rubiales, Enrique made this decision due to “personal reasons.”

Rubiales also announced that assistant Robert Moreno will take over the head coaching post on a permanent basis. Moreno already coached Spain in three games while Enrique was on a leave of absence.

“Luis Enrique has announced he will not continue as coach,” – said Rubiales in a news conference. “It is his decision and we have to respect it. We have to thank Luis Enrique. We’ve learned a lot from him. We will continue to support him. He will always have the doors open in this federation. I ask the press to continue to respect him during this difficult time which is down to a personal issue.”

Luis Enrique took over the Spanish national team in July 2018, replacing interim coach Fernando Hierro. Enrique led the team in 10 games, managing to get eight wins, and will leave after just 11 months in charge.

“Due to the reasons that prevented me from carrying on my duties as coach since March and because they continue, I’ve decided to step down.” – said a statement released on Enrique’s behalf. “All my gratitude to the RFEF for their confidence and the understanding shown. I want to thank especially all the people that are part of the staff and the players for their professionalism. I cannot forget the media for your discretion and the respect shown in view of the situation.”

Since becoming a manager, Enrique had a chance to coach some big clubs including Seria A powerhouse Roma and his former club Barcelona. His biggest success came with Barca, as he managed to win two La Liga titles and UEFA Champions League trophy during his time with on Nou Camp.
