While Liverpool was ecstatic after a 5-1 thumping of Arsenal last weekend, combined with City’s surprising defeat against Leicester City, Pep Guardiola’s side got the best of Liverpool and tightened the top of the EPL table with a 2-1 win on Thursday night.

The loss against Manchester City was Liverpool’s first of the 2018-19 season. Now, Liverpool only maintains a 4-point lead over second-place Man City and a 6-point lead over third-place Tottenham.

The game at Etihad Stadium was tense and full of excitement. Manchester City struck first just before halftime, when a Bernard Silva cross found Sergio Agüero’s boot in the 40th minute. The Argentinian striker’s shot was unstoppable for Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker, which gave Man City a 1-0 halftime edge.

Liverpool equalized in the 64th minute when sensational Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino scores after a brilliant assist from Andrew Robertson found him with an empty net in front.

It didn’t take City to go back ahead, this time definitely, as Leroy Sané snuck a perfectly-placed shot into the right corner of the net, just past Becker’s outstretched arm in the 72nd minute. Raheem Sterling, who was arguably Man City’s best player throughout the game, assisted.

Manchester City held on in the final stretch, which included an agonizing 5 minutes of stoppage time. Pep Guardiola’s side is now officially back in the title race, and with 17 match days to go, the EPL title race is officially back on.
