Manchester City was eliminated from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night following a shock 2-0 defeat to Premier League strugglers Southampton.

City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his frustration with his team’s lackluster performance, noting that they had not even managed to produce a shot on target for the duration of the contest. This is the first time since 2018 that City has not managed to register a single shot on target in a match.

“The better team won,” Guardiola commented during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live. “We didn’t play good, we didn’t play well in the beginning. There are many games you can start not good and overcome and we didn’t do it. When you are not prepared to play this game you arrive one inch late and don’t score a goal. When you are prepared you score the goal.”

Despite retaining 72% possession of the ball and dictating the run of play, City’s inability to be clinical up front led to their downfall. Southampton will now face Newcastle United in the semifinal, while Nottongham Forest will go up against Manchester United.
