The Premier League break due to coronavirus pandemic made Manchester City’s star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne realize how much he loves soccer. According to De Bruyne, all this free time he got made him decide to extend his playing career.

De Bruyne played his last game on March 8th in City’s 2-0 loss to crosstown rivals Manchester United. The Premier League suspended its season shortly after that, and it is unclear when it might resume again. This made the 28-year-old Belgian realize he would like to get as much out of his career as possible.

“I told my wife I’m going to play a little bit longer after the lockdown. I cannot stay at home,” said De Bruyne in a recent video call with reporters. “I’m going to play two more years. It’s hard, man.”

De Bruyne was in the middle of another impressive season, having scored eight goals and dished 16 assists in 26 games in the national competition. And while he would like to continue to play while he’s on a roll, he realized that there are things that are more important than football right now.

“It’s time to play football again. I miss it and it’s difficult. But we are not important, football is not important. People love football… but you need to stay safe,” he added.
