Spanish manager Pep Guardiola won’t be leaving reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at the end of the season after all. According to influential soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, Guardiola decided to extend his stay at Etihad Stadium and signed an extension with the club.
Before agreeing to a new deal, Guardiola was set to be out of contract in the summer of 2025. The extension ensures he will remain with the club at least through next season, while the agreement also contains an option for 2026-27.
Despite enjoying success with City and the club wanting to keep him at all costs, Guardiola largely kept his plans for the future under wraps. There were rumors that he could take a break from managing or pursue another challenge, likely on a national team level.
Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016 from Bayern Munich and has since overseen the most successful period in the club’s history. During his eight and half seasons in charge, Guardiola won 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League trophy.
After addressing his future, Guardiola will now be able to focus on improving City’s sluggish form this season. The team underperformed by its own standards in 2024-25 and is currently on a four-game losing streak, the longest of Guardiola’s managerial career. City is still sitting second in the Premier League standings but is already five points behind leaders Liverpool.
