Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has become Manchester United’s top transfer target for next season, sources revealed to ESPN on Wednesday. This comes as unexpected news, particularly since the Premier League club has pushed their financial limits to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

While the club was able to purchase Ronaldo for a relatively low transfer fee, Man United will have to pay the Portuguese a forward a significantly higher wage than his teammates. Reports suggest that Ronaldo could earn £510,000 per week after tax, making him the highest-paid player in the squad by a significant amount.

At the end of this season, Haaland will have the ability to trigger the release clause in his contract, which is reported to be worth €75 million.

Alongside the Red Devils, other clubs that will be competing to clinch Haaland’s signature include Manchester City, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain.

This is not the first time that the Red Devils have expressed interest in signing Haaland, with the club pursuing the Norwegian striker during the 2019-20 winter transfer window when Haaland instead opted for a move to Borussia Dortmund.
