Manchester United made its first signing of the summer on Wednesday, announcing that it had come to an agreement with Ajax to sign midfielder Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek, who at 23-years-old has become one of the most sought-after young players in Europe over the past two seasons, will finally move away from the club he joined at only 15-years-old to one of the most prestigious teams in the continent.

Manchester United will pay Ajax $46 million up front for van de Beek’s services, a hefty fee that many teams would not have been able to afford in this strange transfer market. Manchester United wanted a quality, young upgrade in its midfield and had money to spend, however, allowing them to make this big transfer.

Ajax could earn up to $7 million more in variables depending on van de Beek and the team’s future performance, meaning that they could end up making $53 million from the deal.

Van de Beek scored 8 goals and notched 6 assists in 23 Eredivisie matches in the 2019-20 season, and also found the net twice in 5 Champions League appearances.

The new Dutchman is expected to join Manchester United in training this week.
