Manchester United moved one step closer to Champions League qualification following their 1-1 draw with West Ham United yesterday. While the draw came as a disappointing home result for the Red Devils, the point that they earned from the game allowed them to steal third-place from Chelsea due to their superior goal difference.
Man Utd’s performance was inconsistent at best, with their first major error coming from Paul Pogba. By way of a bizarre handball, the midfielder gave away a penalty to The Hammers just moments before the half time whistle. Michail Antonio coolly put the penalty away to hand West Ham a half-time lead.
While Mason Greenwood leveled for the home team on the 51st minute mark, the Red Devils were unable to score for the remainder of the match.
Reactions following the full-time whistle were mixed. Former Man Utd captain Gary Neville was outraged over Pogba’s handball, labeling it an “appalling lack of discipline.” On the bright side, young forward Mason Greenwood received a fair amount of praise for his performance.
Red Devils’ manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was one of those impressed by Greenwood’s performance. He explained that Greenwood is “going from strength to strength” and praised him for bailing Man Utd out from a poor result yet again.
