Manchester United decided to award midfielder Nemanja Matic for his great form in the second part of the season. The club announced on Monday that Matic inked a new deal that will keep him with the organization until 2023.

Matic was previously set to leave Old Trafford after being rarely used earlier in 2019/20. However, the 31-year-old Serbian started all but two games in January and emerged as one of the biggest factors in Man Utd’s recent turnaround.

“I am very happy that I will continue to be part of this great club,” said Matic after inking the deal. “As a player, I still have a lot more to give and achieve in my career, and to do that with Manchester United will be a huge honor.”

Nemanja Matic isn’t known as a flashy player, but his contributions go beyond assists and goals as he provides stability in the middle and is efficient in breaking opponents’ attacks. This is especially the case with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United, where he plays alongside offensive-minded Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

“I am delighted that Nemanja has signed a new contract, I know his experience, professionalism, and leadership will be invaluable to this young talented group,” said Solskjaer. “We have great strength in midfield, and Nemanja’s attributes are a key part of that. Nemanja has been here for three seasons now and really understands the values of playing for Manchester United.”

Matic arrived to Manchester in 2017, after previously spending four seasons with Chelsea. Since then, Matic played 114 goals in all competitions and scored four goals. He is yet to win a trophy with the club.
