Manchester United center-back Raphael Varane will be sidelined for a few weeks after incurring an injury while representing France during their 2-1 win over Spain in the UEFA Nations League final at the San Siro stadium. The 28-year-old star was substituted during the first half of the game as a result.

“Raphael Varane sustained a groin muscle injury in the UEFA Nations League final and has commenced rehabilitation at the club”, Manchester United announced in an official statement. It was not disclosed how many weeks in particular the French defender is expected to be unavailable.

The Nations League victory marked a milestone moment in his career, with fellow Man Utd teammates Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial sharing in the success.

Varane’s injury poses a major crisis for Manchester United, particularly as his usual partner at the back, Red Devils captain Harry Maguire is also unavailable. Maguire suffered a calf injury during Man Utd’s clash against Aston Villa and has not returned to action since.

These injuries come at a particularly critical time for the Red Devils, with a host of tough challenges ahead.

Manchester United next faces Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday, after which they face Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City. Sandwiched between those fixtures are two Champions League games against Atalanta.
