Manchester United reportedly had a new deal in place with their goalkeeper David de Gea before backing out of it at the last moment. This happed after de Gea already signed the contract.

According to The Athletic’s Dan Sheldon and Guillermo Rai, de Gea accepted a “drastic reduction” of his £375,000 per week salary in order to stay at Old Trafford, but Man United then changed its mind. They refused to sign the agreement and then returned with a new proposal that came with an even bigger pay cut.

De Gea was caught by surprise with the move and is now considering his options. The 32-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the month. There is an interest in De Gea from Saudi Arabia, but the player reportedly wants to remain in Europe and continue playing at the highest level.

David de Gea ended the season as Premier League’s Golden Glove Award winner after keeping the most clean sheets in the 2022-23 season. However, he has also been mistake-prone and cost his team games on more than one occasion.

The English media reports that United’s manager Erik ten Hag would like to replace De Gea with Inter Milan’s André Onana, with whom he collaborated at Ajax. Onana is considered a much better on-ball player than De Gea, something that Ten Hag values significantly.
