All-Star third baseman Manny Machado now sits alone at the top of the San Diego Padres’ all-time leaders in home runs.
Machado hit his 26th homer of the season in the sixth inning of a 7-3 win over the Seattle Mariners. He now has 164 home runs as a member of the Padres, more than any other player in franchise history.
The previous record of 163 homers was in place for half a century, being achieved by Padres legend Nate Colbert between 1969 and 1974.
Machado set the Padres’ all-time home runs record thanks to the admirable consistency he showed since joining the franchise as a free agent in 2019. He had more than 25 home runs in five of his six seasons in San Diego, with the only time he failed to reach this mark being the shortened 2020 campaign.
“Huge,” Machado said about his achievement. “Especially in the situation of the game (to) give us the lead there and give us a nice little cushion. Definitely a special moment there, for sure, that I’ll never forget.”
Machado, who is batting .276 and has 94 RBIs in 2024, is a big part of the reason why the Padres managed to get in the playoff picture after a slow start of the season. San Diego is currently sitting second in NL West with an 82-64 record and holds one-game lead in the race for the wild-card spot.
