The Miami Marlins will be looking for a new skipper for the 2025 MLB season. According to multiple reports, the Marlins’ current manager, Skip Schumaker, informed the players that he won’t be back with the team next year.

The Marlins previously announced that Schumaker will miss the final two games of the 2024 campaign due to a family emergency.

Schumaker was hired as the Marlins’ manager ahead of the 2023 MLB season and led the team to a remarkable turnaround in his first year in charge. Miami won 84 games and clinched a playoff spot, while Schumaker earned the NL Manager of the Year honors. The team ended up losing in the NL Wild-Card series to the Philadelphia Phillies.

After a successful season, the Marlins organization underwent major changes. General manager Kim Ng opted to step down after the team decided to hire the President of Baseball Operations, who would have seniority over her. After Ng’s exit, Schumaker asked for the removal of the 2025 team option in his contract so he would have more flexibility.

It proved to be a justified demand, as the new front office made a decision to initiate a rebuild and part ways with a number of impactful players. This left Schumaker with limited options on the roster and resulted in a 60-100 record.

Schumaker is now expected to be one of the top candidates for most, if not all, managerial openings around the league. The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox already have vacant spots, while the Toronto Blue Jays, Colorado Rockies, and St. Louis Cardinals might also join the list.
