Chelsea’s search for its new head coach has taken another unexpected turn. According to The Athletic, ex-PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino emerged as a leading candidate for the job in recent days.

The Athletic reports that Chelsea believes Pochettino’s coaching style would be a great fit for the club. He has experience in helping younger players reach their potential while also being experienced in dealing with stars and their big egos.

The London club is believed to have a three-man shortlist at the moment, with Burnley’s manager Vincent Kompany and a mysterious candidate being on it besides Pochettino. Chelsea’s brass will have another round of interviews with all three, but Pochettino is considered to have a big advantage.

Mauricio Pochettino has been out of the job since leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2021-22 season. He has also been linked with a return to Tottenham, where he did an admirable job between 2014-2019.

When Chelsea first sacked Graham Potter back in March, Pochettino’s name wasn’t even mentioned as part of the club’s search. Instead, the Premier League side has been focused on ex-Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann and former Spain and Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique.

Enrique was crossed off due to his prolonged absence from club football and the notion that his style doesn’t fit the Premier League. Nagelsmann, on the other hand, has decided to take himself out of the race this week.
