Lionel Messi has reached a verbal agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to extend his contract with the club until 2024, multiple reports have claimed.

Initially set to run through 2023, Messi reportedly decided to trigger the one-season extension shortly after winning the World Cup with Argentina on Sunday night.

This development comes as no surprise to PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi, who stated on December 8 that he was confident that Messi would remain with the Ligue 1 champions amid rumors of a move to MLS club Inter Miami as well as a return to Barcelona.

“He’s very happy; you can see that with the national team,” Al-Khelaifi claimed in an interview. “So what we agreed together—that after the World Cup, sit down together. But both sides—our side of the club and him—are very happy, so we will talk after the World Cup.”

Since moving to PSG from Barcelona in 2021, Messi has won the Ligue 1 title as well as the French Super Cup. he now has 12 goals and 14 assists for the club in all competitions this season.
