Even if he hasn’t been helping the team on the field, German midfielder Mesut Özil is doing what he can to help Arsenal.

It was announced this week that the team was firing their mascot Gunnersaurus, who has been with the team for 27 years. Apparently, the team no longer needs the services of a mascot amid the coronavirus pandemic, since there are no fans in the stadium currently.

The man behind the mask, Jerry Quy, has been in the dinosaur suit since 1993 and has become a beloved figure throughout the Premier League.

Arsenal had already announced during the summer that they would be firing upwards of 55 employees in order to cut costs since the team is not making any money from ticket sales and broadcasters because of COVID-19.

But here comes Özil to the rescue. Responding to the news on social media, the Arsenal midfielder said that he would be willing to pay Gunnersaurus’s wages for the duration of his time at Arsenal.

Özil hasn’t seen the field since returning from lockdown in June, and most likely will not be offered a renewal, meaning that he has volunteered to pay the mascot’s wages until the summer of 2021, giving both the team enough time to find a way to retain Quy and Quy enough time to find employment elsewhere of the gig is truly coming to an end for him.
