New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte underwent surgery to repair a core muscle injury, the team announced on Thursday. The operation is expected to help him overcome an injury setback that impaired him throughout the second half of the previous MLB season.

According to the Mets, Marte’s recovery from surgery is expected to take up to eight weeks. Should his rehabilitation progress according to this timeline, Marte should be able to participate in spring training and will be available for selection with no restrictions once again in mid-February.

On September 6, Marte suffered a broken right middle finger after being hit by a 96 mph fastball from Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller. This greatly disrupted the outfielder’s first season on a new $78 million, four-year contract with the Mets, as prior to the injury, the player hit .292 with 16 homers, 63 RBI, and 18 stolen bases.

Prior to signing for the Mets, Marte played seven seasons for the Pirates before spending brief tenures at Arizona, Miami, and Oaklands. His career high came in 2016 at Pittsburgh, when he was named an All-Star.
