Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has joined Serie A club Salernitana on a free transfer from Club America, the Italian club announced on Friday. Ochoa’s contract will run through June 2023.

“The player has tied up with the club until June 30, 2023, with an option to extend and will wear the number 13 jersey,” Salernitana announced in a public statement.

Salernitana’s decision to sign the veteran goalkeeper comes as a result of first-choice goalkeeper’s Luigi Sepe unavailability after suffering a calf injury.

Ochoa is widely known for his representation of the Mexican national team at the World Cup on five separate occasions. He notably blocked a Robert Lewandowski penalty as Mexico held on for a goalless draw against Poland during the group stage of the 2022 edition. Despite his goalkeeping efforts, Mexico was unable to advance from the group stage after losing to Argentina despite defeating Saudi Arabia in the final group game.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper is expected to make his debut for the club on January 4, when Salernitana faces reigning Serie A champions AC Milan.
