23-year-old forward Michael Porter Jr. and the Denver Nuggets reached an agreement on a five-year contract extension. According to Porter’s agent, Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, the deal could be worth up to $207 million.

Porter’s ability to hit the $207 million mark depends on whether or not the player will feature in one of the three All-NBA teams this season. The deal, which Porter and the Nuggets negotiated over the course of the offseason, proved to be complicated to figure out due to the issue of Porter’s talent coinciding with his history of back issues.

The 6-foot-10 Porter is known for his scoring talents, having averaged 19 points while shooting 54.2% from the field and 44.5% from 3-point range last season.

After enrolling at the University of Missouri in 2017, Porter suffered his first back injury, ruling the player out of all but three of his college basketball games that season. Due to the same issue, Porter dropped down to the 14th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Fortunately for the rookie, Denver Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly decided to take a chance on Porter after acknowledging his talent on the court.

After a breakout season, Porter’s performance and persistence is starting to pay major dividends.
