Mohamed Salah’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with Egypt has come to a premature end after he suffered a hamstring injury during his team’s 2-2 draw with Ghana on Thursday. While it initially appeared as if he could be fit in time to play in the knockout rounds of the tournament according to the Egypt Football Association, he has since departed the tournament, opting to undergo rehabilitation with his club Liverpool.

Still, the Egyptian FA has expressed hope that Salah could return, stating: “We are hoping to catch him in the semifinals of the Africa Nations Cup in case of qualification.” Still, no timeline has been given as to his potential return.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed support for Salah’s return to his club, explaining that in his mind, it makes sense that the player rehabilitates “with us or with our people”. Klopp revealed that he spoke with Salah on the night of his injury, with any subsequent contact coming between Salah and Liveprool’s medical staff.
