Dave Martinez will get a few more attempts to bring back Washington Nationals to World Series. According to multiple reports, Martinez signed a new three-year deal that extends his stay with the franchise through 2023.

Martinez, who won World Series with Nationals last season, previously had a deal that runs for one more year after this season. The new contract will now replace the old one while giving the 55-year-old manager a pay rise. Reportedly, he will earn $7.5 million in total in the next three years.

By extending Martinez, Nationals are securing manager-front office continuity for several more years. Washington’s general manager also inked a new deal through 2023 earlier this year.

Dave Martinez was appointed as Washington Nationals’ manager in 2018, taking over the team after coaching stints with Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs. Martinez had a promising start of his managerial career, leading the Nationals to an 82-80 record but narrowly missing out on playoffs.

In his second season at the helm, Martinez improved to 93 wins and then led the team to a surprising playoff run that culminated in a 4-3 win over Houston Astros in World Series.

Nationals won’t have a chance to defend their title this season, considering they are already out of the playoffs sitting on the fifth spot in NL East with a 23-34 record.
