NBA is close to reaching its goal of starting the new NBA campaign around Christmas.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the league and NBA Players’ Association are expected to agree on a 72-game season with December 22nd set as a tip-off date.

Wojnarowski reports that team representatives and players need to have a formal vote on the plan but points out that both camps feel optimistic about the outcome.

Other details of the proposal include opening the training camps on December 1st and having three preseason games for each team.

NBA’s Commissioner Adam Silver previously hinted that the start of the 2020/21 season could be pushed back to January, opening the possibility for the fans to return to arenas. However, as the coronavirus pandemic didn’t show signs of slowing down, which was a must if the games were to be played in front of an audience, the league started preparing a plan for an earlier start and a shorter season.

This new plan will allow the league to make up for a portion of lost revenue thanks to Christmas Day games while also allowing the season to wrap up before the Summer Olympics in Tokyo start.
