The Brooklyn Nets confirmed on Monday that Spencer Dinwiddie is dealing with a partially torn ACL and will need to undergo surgery to fix the issue.

According to the team’s announcement, Dinwiddie suffered the injury in the third quarter of a 106–104 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday. The 27-year-old player is scheduled to have the procedure next week.

It is unclear whether Dinwiddie will play again this season, but the Nets are preparing for this scenario, according to multiple reports around the league.

The news represents a tough blow for Brooklyn and their title hopes in light of Dinwiddie’s recent emergence as one of the team’s key rotational players. This was especially the case last season when he delivered a breakthrough campaign while filling in for injured All-Star Kyrie Irving.

That being said, the return of superstar Kevin Durant may soften the blow and allow Brooklyn to go far regardless.

Dinwiddie served as the team’s starting point guard for the better part of 2019-20, posting career numbers across the board and averaging 20.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game.

Dinwiddie was a starter in the first three games of this season as well, serving as Irving’s partner in the backcourt.

The Nets will now most likely turn to Caris LeVert as a starter instead of Dinwiddie. LeVert is averaging 17 points, 4.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 2 steals this season.
