Not only have the New York Giants started off their season with two losses for the seventh time in eight years, they also look to have lost their best player to a season-ending injury in Sunday’s 17-13 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Star running back Saquon Barkley fell to the ground in agony in the second quarter and was carried away by the training staff. Early indications are that he has torn his ACL and will not be coming back this season.

Nothing worse could have happened to the rebuilding Giants and their general manager David Gettleman, who drafted Barkley with the No. 2 pick in the 2018 and is already on the hot seat for not being able to put together anything resembling a winning team since being hired.

Since Gettleman was hired in December 2017, the Giants have nine wins and 25 losses.

The Giants have an all-new coaching staff this year, who were relying on Barkley to be the one player they would be able to rely on most while the team works out its kinks. Barkley was also going to be key to the maturation of second-year quarterback Daniel Jones.

The only two running backs the Giants currently have on the roster other than Barkley are Dion Lewis, a third-down back who is pushing 30, and Wayne Gallman, who has only run the ball 80 times over the last two seasons.
