After two seasons and a combined record of 9-23, the New York Jets have officially fired head coach Adam Gase.

Despite the Jets playing better at the end of the season, Gase’s fate was already sealed when the team started the season with 13 straight losses. The Jets won two of their last three games of the season, finishing with a 2-14 record. They will also have the second overall pick in the 2021 draft.

Starting the season with zero wins over 13 games, New York was in a prime spot to secure the first overall pick and draft Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who is about as close to a sure thing as possible when looking at quarterback prospects.

However, two wins in a row gave the Jacksonville Jaguars the first pick, who will certainly not pass up the opportunity to draft Lawrence.

The Jets will now have to decide whether they are going to try to continue to build around their third-year quarterback Sam Darnold or start over with a new signal-caller.

Two other options at quarterback in the draft are Ohio State’s Justin Fields, who threw six touchdowns on Saturday to beat Lawrence’s Clemson team, and BYU’s Zach Wilson.

Gase was brought in primarily to help turn Darnold into a franchise quarterback—but failed to do so. Considering the fact that Gase wasn’t very successful as Miami’s head coach prior to joining the Jets, it’s hard to see another team giving him a shot any time soon.
