Newcastle United are on the market for a new midfielder after Italian Sandro Tonali received a 10-month suspension. According to multiple reports, Newcastle’s primary target is Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips is expected to be available in January as he has been sparsely used by manager Pep Guardiola so far in 2023-24. The England international played only four games in the Premier League and spent less than 90 minutes on the field in total.

Newcastle will likely face tough competition in securing a deal for Phillips. Several other European clubs are reportedly interested in the 27-year-old, including Juventus and Bayern Munich.

If Newcastle doesn’t manage to get Phillips, the club is believed to have several backup options. Their shopping list also includes Al Hilal’s Ruben Neves, who already has Premier League experience from his time with Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Atalanta’s Ederson.

After establishing himself as one of the brightest talents in England with Leeds United, Kalvin Phillips secured a £42 million move to Manchester City in 2022. Unfortunately, injuries have prevented him from getting a good start at Etihad Stadium as he only managed to play 12 Premier League games in his first season with the club due to various injuries.

Phillips is believed to be healthy now but is far from his previous form. The player would be open to moving to a club that would give him more playing time as he hopes to make the England squad for the 2024 EURO.
