The NFL finally came to terms with the underwhelming results of its annual Pro Bowl game produced in recent years. As a result, the league decided to nix the Pro Bowl game altogether and will have “The Pro Bowl Games” instead.
“The Pro Bowl Games” will take place during the Pro Bowl weekend and include the best NFC and AFC players squaring off in a number of football and non-football competitions. This will include the fan-favorite skill challenges as well as a flag football game.
The Pro Bowl Games will take place on February 5, 2023, at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Detailing the league’s decision, NFL executive Peter O’Reilly told The Associated Press that NFL has been looking into ways to “evolve” the Pro Bowl for a while.
“We think there’s a real opportunity to do something wholly different here and move away from the traditional tackle football game,” said O’Reilly. “We decided the goal is to celebrate 88 of the biggest stars in the NFL in a really positive, fun, yet competitive way.”
The NFL also brought Hall of Famer Peyton Manning on board for the revamped Pro Bowl. Manning and his production company will be involved in the program and promotion aspects of the “The Pro Bowl Games.” The former Indianapolis Colt and Denver Broncos’ star quarterback will also be one of the coaches for the flag football game.
The NFL had its first Pro Bowl game in 1950 and has since tried numerous ways to make the event more interesting. However, with players fearing injuries and not having much to play for anyway, the games have lacked excitement and were mostly exhibition performances in recent years. The 2021 Pro Bowl game saw AFC win 41-35, with QB Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers) and DE Maxx Crosby (Las Vegas Raiders) taking home the Offensive MVP and Defensive MVP honors, respectively.
