Nick Kyrgios ended his run at the 2025 Australian Open, being eliminated in the first round by the world’s No. 86 player Jacob Fearnley. After the match, Kyrgios hinted that he would retire from tennis in the near future.

Kyrgios entered the first Grand Slam tournament of the year following a lengthy recovery from wrist and hip injuries. Playing in only his third match in more than two years, Kyrgios put up a good effort but wasn’t able to win a single set. He did, however, give the audience their money’s worth.

Speaking with reporters after the match, Kyrgios said that he played with “65% of my capacity.”

“For [the fans] to really see me fighting and still giving me that energy, it meant a lot, because I feel like I’ve given my life to tennis and I’ve tried to give them a show every time I go out there,” Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios added that he doesn’t see himself playing another singles match at Australian Open. He is scheduled to play in this year’s doubles tournament with Thanasi Kokkinakis.

“Realistically, I can’t see myself playing a singles match here again,” he shared.

When asked about whether 2025 will be his last season, Kyrgios didn’t provide a definite answer but said he intends to play at the remaining three Grand Slams this year and hopes to “make some noise at Wimbledon.”

Nick Kyrgios achieved his highest ranking in 2016 when he was the No. 13 tennis player in the world. His biggest success was his 2022 finals appearance at Wimbledon, and he also won a doubles title at the Australian Open in the same year.
