Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios won’t play at the 2023 U.S. Open. The news was officially confirmed by the U.S. Tennis Association on social media earlier this week.

Kyrgios reached the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows last year before being eliminated by Karen Khachanov. It was the Australian’s best U.S. Open result and the first time he advanced past the third round.

Kyrgios had arguably his best season in 2022, making the Finals at Wimbledon, winning Australian Open in doubles, and winning Washington Open. However, a series of injuries have sidelined him for the better part of 2023.

The 28-year-old player was first forced to withdraw from the 2023 Australian Open due to arthroscopic surgery and then missed French Open while recovering. Kyrgios returned to action in June at Stuttgart Open but ended up suffering a wrist injury while preparing for Wimbledon. His absence from U.S. Open is likely the result of the same injury.

A good run in 2022 helped Kyrgios reach No. 19 on ATP Rankings in February. This was the first time that he was ranked in the Top 20 since 2018. However, extended absence from tennis courts caused him to slide all the way to No. 92.

U.S. Open is currently scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 10.
