The San Francisco 49ers quarterback underwent surgery on Friday on his right ankle, the team confirmed on Saturday. This is Lance’s second surgery on the same ankle within a timeframe of three months.

Originally injured during September, the need to undergo a second surgery arose due to Lance experiencing some irritation in the previously injured area. As a result, some hardware was removed in order to alleviate his discomfort.

“Due to the location of the fracture, the required hardware placement was close to a tendon in Lance’s ankle,” the Niners revealed in a statement. “During the rehab process, their close proximity proved to cause irritation in his ankle. After consulting with multiple experts, the decision was made to have the hardware removed to prevent future issues in the ankle.”

Lance was initially injured during the Niners’ victory over the Seattle Seahawks on September 18. As a result of his injury, he underwent ankle surgery the following day in order to repair what the team labeled a “fractured fibula and ligament damage”.

The Niners confirmed that Lance will continue his rehabilitation as planned and is expected to make a full recovery by the time that the team commences its organized activities in the spring.
