It looks like Mackenzie Blackwood has secured his position as the New Jersey Devils’ goalkeeper of the future. The Devils re-signed Blackwood to a three-year deal on Wednesday, with the 24-year-old keeper being set to earn a total of $8.4 million.
Blackwood is coming off a promising 2019-20 campaign in which he posted a 2.77 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage while having three shutouts.
The Devils posted a record of 22-14-8 with Blackwood as a starter, which was enough to convince the franchise that he can be a long-term solution for them on goal.
“Mackenzie is going to be one of the key young, core pieces for this organization for a long time, and we are excited and extremely happy to have him under contract,” said Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald in a statement. “He’s obviously shown that he can be a No. 1 goalie, and the sky’s the limit for him.”
The Devils previously cleared the way for Blackwood to get the No. 1 spot by buying out their veteran longtime goalie Cory Schneider. Blackwood will be backed by veteran Corey Crawford, who joined in the offseason on a two-year deal.
