Winger Josh Sims has ended his loan stint with MLS side New York Red Bulls and returned to his parent club Southampton.

Red Bulls announced on Wednesday that they have decided not to extend the loan agreement, citing Sims’ desire to return to native England.

“In light of the ongoing effects of the global pandemic and all of the uncertainties that remain, we understand Josh’s wishes to be closer to home and have come to an agreement with Southampton to recall the player,” said Red Bulls’ sporting director Denis Hamlett.

Josh Sims initially joined Red Bulls on a five-month loan in August last year. He ended up playing eight games during the 2019 MLS season, contributing a goal in the team’s 4-3 loss to Philadelphia Union in the playoffs. Pleased with Sims’ performances, the club ended up deciding to extend his loan for another six months.

Before coming to MLS, Sims made 20 appearances for Southampton since receiving his professional debut in 2016. He also played 18 games while on loan with Reading during the 2018/19 seasons.
