New York City FC pulled off an unlikely 1-0 victory over league leaders Columbus Crew in their clash at the Red Bull Arena on Monday night.

Throughout the opening 10 minutes, New York City seemed the more likely to score, however, Columbus Crew’s defense held steadfast as NYC’s pair of shots were swiftly dealt with.

Yet again in the 25th minute, New York City came close as Heber fired a close-range shot, only to be denied by a brave deflection by Columbus center back Aboubacar Keita. The rest of the first half remained fairly subdued as the game remained goalless going into half time.

New York City came out swinging in the second half, with Jesus Medina taking a threatening corner in the 48th minute. Just three minutes later and New York City had their best attempt on goal yet, as winger Alexandru Mitriță beat the keeper with a long-range screamer, only to hit the crossbar.

NYCFC finally found their breakthrough in the 59th minute, when Heber intercepted the ball after a Columbus defensive miscue and provided Alex Ring with an easy tap in. 1-0 the score remained as New York City secured an unexpected victory.

This result marks NYCFC’s second win of the season and Columbus Crew’s first defeat. While Columbus Crew retains top spot on the Eastern Conference standings, New York City FC surge up to 10th place.
