New York City FC is in the closing stages of finalizing a transfer for U.S. international midfielder Alfredo Morales according to influential German outlet Bild. Morales is currently playing for the Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Morales will be out of contract in June, but NYCFC would like to get him before the start of the 2021 MLS season in April. Dusseldorf is also motivated to make an agreement and get a small fee instead of losing the 30-year-old player on a free transfer in the summer. The Athletic’s Sam Stejskal also confirmed Bild’s report on social media.

Morales would immediately make NYCFC better with his experience, but he would also face a tough competition to secure a spot in the starting lineup. The MLS side already has a crowded midfield that includes veterans Keaton Parks and Tony Rocha as well as talents like James Sands and Nicolas Acevedo.

Alfredo Morales spent his entire career in Germany, playing for Hertha BSC, FC Ingolstadt, and Fortuna. He left the most significant mark with Ingolstadt, where he played a total of 149 games and contributed with 10 goals and 11 assists.

Despite being born in Germany, Morales was eligible to play for the United States on an international level thanks to his father. He made his debut for USMNT in 2013 and has since made 13 appearances.
