U.S. youth international midfielder James Sands received a reward from New York City FC for his fine performance in recent seasons. According to the MLS team, Sands inked a new contract with the organization that will keep him around for five more years.

Sands, who signed for the club as a homegrown player in 2017, started 16 games for NYCFC last season and provided one assist.

“We’re really pleased James has signed a new contract with the club, and this moment is well deserved,” said NYCFC sporting director David Lee in a statement.

Sands received attention from Europe in recent months and reportedly received interest from clubs from Germany and Netherlands. Although the 20-year-old player has decided to continue growing as a player in the United States at the moment, playing abroad still remains his goal.

“Long-term, playing at a top level in Europe has always been my dream and still is,” said Sands while adding that he believes NYCFC can help him achieve that dream.

James Sands made his debut in the MLS in 2017 and went on to make a total of 39 appearances in the last four seasons. He also played for the United States U17 team and took part in the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship where he was selected into the Team of the Tournament.
