Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana has taken the decision to step down from his country’s national team, the player announced on Twitter.

“My story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end,” Onana posted. “Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player,” Onana wrote, without citing reasons for his decision. “Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team.”

The Inter Milan player found himself at the center of controversy during his national team’s World Cup campaign in Qatar. After butting heads with Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song, Onana took to social media to release a statement referring to his disagreement with Song over tactical decisions.

Onana’s outcry resulted in the player’s suspension from the team. Having appeared in the 1-0 loss to Switzerland in the team’s opening game, he was unable to play in the 3-3 draw with Serbia as a result of his ban.

While Cameroon was able to turn their form around in a surprise 1-0 victory over Brazil in their final group game, this feat was not enough to secure qualification to the knockout rounds.
