Baltimore Orioles will head into the 2020 MLB season without left-hand pitcher Ty Blach and shortstop Richie Martin. According to the team’s official announcement, both players are scheduled to undergo surgeries on Wednesday and face significant downtime.
Blach experienced elbow soreness last week during an intrasquad game. He was examined by two doctors before deciding to undergo Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old player isn’t expected back until 2021 MLB season.
Martin also injured himself during one of Baltimore’s intrasquad games, hurting his wrist while diving into first base. He is scheduled to miss a couple of months of action and might play this season unlike Blach.
“It’s awful for both of them,” said Orioles’ manager Brandon Hyde.
Ty Blach has been with Baltimore Orioles since last August, making five appearances during the 2019 season and posting 1-3 record. Blach, who also played with San Francisco Giants, has 16–22 career record with 4.99 ERA and 178 strikeouts.
Richie Martin made his MLB debut last season and ended up playing 120 games for Orioles. He finished the year with .208 batting average, six homers, and 23 RBIs.
