The Green Bay Packers have decided to move from tight end Jace Sternberger, their third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The team waived Sternberger on Tuesday, confirming the news via social media.

The Packers coach Matt LaFleur spoke with the media after the move became official and said it was a “tough decision” to release Sternberger.

“That’s always a tough decision whenever you have a competitive room like that,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday. “It was one of those deals where we appreciate everything Jace has done.”

Sternberger is expected to clear waivers in the upcoming days and become a free agent. He can be claimed by other NFL teams before that, but this scenario seems unlikely considering his unimpressive resume in the past two seasons.

Green Bay had high hopes for Sternberger when he entered the league, but the Texas A&M product never managed to carve an impactful role for himself on the team. He was hampered by injuries in his rookie year, making only one catch during the regular season.

Sternberger made a slightly better impression during his sophomore campaign, making 12 receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown. Still, this obviously wasn’t enough for the Packers to hold onto him, and he will now have to look for another opportunity to make his mark in the league.
