The San Diego Padres, who have been one of the MLB’s hottest teams out of the gate this season, got a bit of discouraging news prior to their Friday night game against the Colorado Rockies as starting first baseman Eric Hosmer hit the injured list.

Hosmer, who has gotten off to a torrid start for the 6-3 Padres, is dealing with a stomach ailment which has made it impossible for him to take the field since the middle of last week. The ailment is gastritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach lining and is unrelated to COVID-19.

The four-time Gold Glove Award winner and 2016 AL All-Star had been impressive before having to sit out with the ailment, batting .500 with 1 home run and 7 RBI in limited action for San Diego this season.

The roster move is retroactive to July 29th, the first day which Hosmer was forced to sit out. This means that he could return to the team by next weekend if he is feeling better. However, the Padres gave no initial timeline on when their first baseman might be able to come back.

In the meantime, Ty France and Wil Myers are expected to pick up the bulk of the playing time at first base.
