MLB’s trading market is slowly coming to life. San Diego Padres announced on Friday that they have acquired left-hand reliever Tim Hill from Kansas City Royals in exchange for outfielder Franchy Cordero.

Young pitcher Ronald Bolanos is also making his way to Kansas City alongside Cordero.

Cordero made his majors debut in 2017 with a lot of promise, but injuries stalled his development and didn’t allow him to live up to his potential. The 25-year-old player has .240 batting average with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs during his three years with Padres.

“It was difficult dealing Franchy for a lot of reasons,” said Padres general manager A.J. Preller. “He came up through the Padres organization. He’s an A-plus person. … Having those conversations is never easy.”

Hill, on the other hand, spent the majority of his career in the minors. He received a shot in MLB in 2018 and has since played 116 games, posting 3-4 record with 4.11 ERA and 81 strikeouts.

The 30-year-old player fills a position of need for Padres and is expected to become a regular piece in the team’s rotations.

“With the Castillo injury, from our standpoint, just adding another quality reliever, especially from the left side, that can complement the guys we currently have,” Preller added. “It’s somebody we’ve had our eyes on, and ultimately it lined up for us.”
