Carolina Panthers are close to signing free-agent wideout Cam Phillips according to NFL Network. Phillips got the contract after taking part in tryouts over the weekend alongside several other wide receivers.

Phillips spent the 2019 playing in now-defunct XFL with Houston Roughnecks. In five games with Roughnecks, the 24-year-old wideout had 31 receptions for league-leading 455 yards and nine touchdowns.

At Panthers, Phillips will be reunited with his former Roughnecks’ quarterback PJ Walker, who joined the organization earlier this year.

Cam Phillips spent his college career at Virginia Tech, where he had 236 receptions for 3,027 yards and 17 touchdowns in four years. After going undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, Phillips signed with Buffalo Bills. He appeared in two games, registering one catch for nine yards before being released.

Phillips is expected to add depth to Panthers’ WR core that has recently been hit with injuries. During training camp, Carolina lost veterans Tommylee Lewis and Seth Roberts to injuries while third-year player Keith Kirkwood and rookie Omar Bayless also haven’t been fully fit.
