41-year-old forward Patrick Marleau returned to the San Jose Sharks on a one-year deal, it was announced on Tuesday. The financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

This veteran scored 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) in 66 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins as well as the Sharks last season, in what was his 22nd year in the NHL.

After signing the deal, Marleau had the following to say: “I still love playing, I still love the competition. [I’m] still going after my dream of winning the Stanley Cup and, yeah, [I’m] still able to get out there and play and have fun. I think that’s the thing that keeps me going.”

One of the greatest players in Sharks’ history, Marleau finds himself at the top of several all-time leaderboards at the West Coast franchise. This includes the leaderboards for most games (1,551), goals (518) and points (1,102). He also finds himself ranked in second place behind Joe Thornton for the most career assists, having made 548.

Sharks GM Doug Wilson directed heaps of praise in Marleau’s direction, stating: “Patrick is one of the most iconic players in San Jose Sharks history, as well as being one of the most respected veterans in the National Hockey League.”
