Former New York City FC head coach Patrick Vieira is reportedly interested in returning to the U.S. However, the legendary Arsenal midfielder wouldn’t be taking over an MLS side. Instead, Vieira has his eyes on the vacant position of head coach for the United States men’s national team.

According to multiple reports, Viera has expressed interest in coaching the USMNT, and the U.S. Soccer Federation is aware of this. The two sides already made initial contact, although the talks haven’t progressed to a formal stage at this point.

USMNT has an open head coaching position after Gregg Berhalter’s contract expired following the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The USSF decided to take a patient approach in searching for Berhalter’s replacement, with first Anthony Hudson and now B.J. Callaghan coaching the team on an interim basis.

While Viera is one of the candidates, the USSF is considering a number of other names, including former RB Leipzig and Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch. The final decision is expected to be made by August, according to previous comments from USSF’s sporting director Matt Crocker.

Patrick Vieira has been unemployed since being fired by Crystal Palace following a string of disappointing results to start the 2022-23 season. Viera previously coached NYCFC and Ligue 1 side Nice.
